CCTV technology for Long Eaton passengers

12/13/2008 AT 08:05

The new digital CCTV system, already in place at Long Eaton, provides live images directly to East Midlands Trains Integrated Control Centre in Derby, which is manned round the clock. The team at the Control Centre work closely with Network Rail and manage the smooth running of the railway in the East Midlands area.

The new CCTV system sees a move away from a VHS system that simply records images for future reference, i.e. not available to be viewed live, to a state of the art digitally recorded system that can be monitored live in the Control Centre. This is made possible by the use of broadband technology.

Rob Mason Information and Security Manager for East Midlands Trains said: “We hope that the new CCTV system here at Long Eaton will give passengers a sense of reassurance. Knowing that images are being ‘beamed' live over a secure internet connection to a control centre should provide people with an added sense of security when using the station here at Long Eaton, particularly at times when the ticket office is closed.

”An added bonus is that on occasions when we have service disruption the live images will enable our control team here in Derby to much better manage the situation out at stations, helping us to get trains running on time again sooner than would otherwise be possible.”

It's our intention during the East Midlands Trains franchise to spend £90M on improvements for passengers including better facilities at stations, refurbished trains and depot upgrades. If the pilot of this CCTV is a success at Long Eaton we may roll out to other stations on our route.”

It is expected that a decision on the rollout of CCTV to East Midlands Trains stations will be made early in the New Year.
